Peter D’Agostino, Reese Williams

World-Wide-Walks / between earth & water / ICE is a video-web-sound installation of Peter d’Agostino’s video walks performed at glaciers in Iceland, Alaska & Argentina. These sites at the top and bottom of the globe provide compelling evidence of escalating man-made climatic changes. The World-Wide-Walks projects, initiated by d’Agostino in the 1970s, now combine elements of natural, cultural & virtual identities: complimentary realities of walking through physical environments and of virtually surfing the web. The exhibition is presented in a surround- soundscape composed by Reese Williams as evolving resonant glacial dynamics within the complex array of video images, maps, and texts.

Peter d’Agostino’s pioneering photography, video and new media projects have been exhibited internationally for over four decades, including: The Museum of Modern Art, N.Y., and biennials at the Whitney Museum of American Art; Sao Paulo, Brazil; Kwangju, Korea, etc. He has received grants and fellowships from: the National Endowment for the Arts, Pew Trusts, Onassis Foundation, Japan Foundation, the Center for Advanced Visual Studies, MIT, Fulbright awards to Brazil, Australia, and Italy, as well as a Leonardo Art & Climate Change project award in 2010. D’Agostino is Professor of Film & Media Arts, Center for the Arts, Temple University, Philadelphia. Reese Williams is a sound artist and practitioner of Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy, working in Rhinebeck and New York City. His explorations with sound involve creating “fields of sound” for installation, for download on the internet or for performance settings. Underlying all of his work is an interest in wave phenomena, micro-harmonics and micro-rhythmic events. His instrument is a laptop with simple digital tools, and his sound sources range from sine waves to diverse bits of audio grabbed from the internet. Peter d’Agostino’s pioneering video, photography, and new media
projects have been exhibited internationally for over five decades. His work was in
the biennial exhibitions of Sao Paulo, Brazil; Gwangju, South Korea; Whitney Museum
of American Art, New York; and is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art,
New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Getty Museum, Los Angeles; Berkeley
Art Museum/Pacific Film Archive; Oakland Museum of California; National Gallery of
Canada; Palais des Beaux-Arts, Charleroi, Belgium; CaixaForum, Barcelona; among
others. D’Agostino’s grants and fellowships include: the National Endowment for the
Arts, Pew Trusts, Onassis Foundation, Japan Foundation, and the Center for Advanced
Visual Studies, MIT. He was an artist-in-residence at the TV Laboratory, WNET, New
York, the Banff Centre for the Arts, Canada, the Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio
Center, Italy as well as a visiting artist at the American Academy in Rome and the
Art / Sci Center University of California, Los Angeles. Surveys of his
World-Wide-Walks projects were exhibited at University of Paris I Pantheon-Sorbonne
Art Gallery, Bizkaia Art Gallery, Bilbao, Spain; and Laboratorio Arte Alemeda,
Mexico City. The book, World-Wide-Walks / Peter d’Agostino: Crossing
Natural-Cultural-Virtual Frontiers (2019), was published by Intellect Press, UK and
the University of Chicago Press, USA.
