MERAKI

Daniel Belquer, Aria Pretzel, Fito Segrera, Frances Wang, Kevin Ramsay, Marc Wilhite, Nicole Messier, Patricia Harris, Yana Bÿrikova

MERAKI is a responsive environment with live performance. Interactive wires are attached to 4 spatialized speakers and human body capacitance is therefore used to trigger alterations on sound and image. Live guitar, melodica, voice and midi controllers are used to create a sonic atmosphere that floods the space with a large range of sonic impulses.

Meraki is a word that modern Greeks often use to describe when you really put yourself into what you’re doing, whatever it may be. We embraced this concept because that’s what Harvestworks International Art Collective is all about. Boundaries are driven from each members own passions and desires rather than by excluding processes.

We are touching the issues of presence, virtuality, human interaction in various forms. The audience is engaged in a conversation with the space and an exploration where presence creates a connection between the physical and the digital.

The relations between each person and the space is constantly being altered not only by the audience’s relation to the actual installation, but also because of all the sonic stymulus coming from the players in the opposite side of the room.

Representatives from 4 continents, 6 different countries have been gathered together and kept working moved by mutual admiration and passion for art, overcoming personal, cultural and background differences to accomplish this interdisciplinary project.
