In connection with Victoria Vesna’s card game launch the day before, Harvestworks hosts a book launch and symposium for Xiaoying Juliette Yuan’s major publication project “Context Providers: Conditions of Meaning in Media Arts”, edited by Victoria Vesna, Christiane Paul and Margot Lovejoy in collaboration with Beijing BeePub Publication and the Gold Wall Press. The symposium will focus on the perception of Context Providers in the Chinese art world. Harvestworks is honored to have guest speakers from Shanghai presenting an introduction on Media Arts’ development in China.

As part of the 2010-2013 major publication project, Chinese curator and researcher Xiaoying Juliette Yuan published Context Providers: Conditions of Meaning in Media Arts, edited by Victoria Vesna, Christiane Paul and Margot Lovejoy in collaboration with Beijing BeePub Publication and the Gold Wall Press in August 2012. The book supplies context and rationale for discussing how technological change has affected the function of art, the role of the artist, and the way artistic productions are disseminated. It also explores how technologically networked environments increase the need for flexible information filters as a framework for establishing meaning. Moreover, Context Providers considers the work of media artists who are directly engaging the scientific community through collaboration and active dialogue.

Context Providers: Conditions of Meaning in Media Arts published in Mandarin has been well received in the Chinese contemporary art world, particularly amongst the young activists in the cross-field of art, science and technology. The authors’ investigation on the definition of Digital Art, the collaboration between artists and scientists, the various debates on creation, production, exhibition model, space, and the role and function of Media Arts in contemporary human society, has enlightened readers to reflect on the “context providers” that support the discipline’s development in China.

Victoria Vesna one of the book authors will be present at the book launch and the symposium proposed by Xiaoying Juliette Yuan, the initiator for the translation of the book. The symposium will focus on the perception of Context Providers in the Chinese art world. We are honored to have the following guest speakers from Shanghai present an introduction on Media Arts’ development in China:

Xiaoying Juliette YUAN

Ms. Yuan is an independent curator and researcher living and working in Beijing.

She received her Master of Comparative Literature from Paris III (La Sorbonne Nouvelle, Paris, France) and is currently a PhD candidate at the Planetary Collegium (University of Plymouth, UK). As one of the most active figures in the Chinese media arts scene Ms Yuan’s projects which include performances, exhibitions, conferences, and workshops, relate to the development of the alliance of art, science and technology. Project collaborators include governmental institutions, academies, museums, festivals, private institutions and foundations, both in China and overseas.

An active lecturer, editor and writer, Ms. Yuan lectures at Chinese and Foreign academies, and festivals. She has published numerous surveys, critics, and interviews in various major Chinese fine arts magazines and international academic journals. She edited the first collection of Roy Ascott’s writings, “The Future is Now: Art, Technology and Consciousness” in Mandarin and published the book in June 2012.

Ms. Yuan curated the first retrospective of Roy Ascott in China, “Roy Ascott: the Syncretic Cybernetics”, and the “IMMERSION | Art and Technology workshops” within the educational program of the 2012 Shanghai Biennial, with the collaboration of Roy Ascott (UK), Jeffrey Shaw (HK/Australia), Joseph Nechvatal (USA), Ulf Langheinrich (HK/Austria), Ilya Eric Lee (TW), Graham Harwood (UK) and Linda LAI (HK).

Johnson Design Center and Professor in the School of Media Studies at The New School, as well as Adjunct Curator of Digital Art at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
