The Workings of Media [Art and Artists] is a series of presentations, workshops, open studios and exhibitions to understand social and cultural changes reflected through the lens of art and artists.  Curator and director Carol Parkinson has selected these artists because of their use of the new media technology including data sonification and visualization, immersive sound, smell and social networks.  The Art and Technology program is a component of our Creative Residency and Sponsored Projects programs and seeks to create a responsive public context for the appreciation of new work and to advance the art’s community and the public’s appreciation of the use of technology in art. About the Harvestworks Art and Technology Program on Governors Island

The Art and Technology Program on Governors Island is centered on art works created at the intersection of art and technology. It includes artists open studios, exhibitions of digital media art, public workshops and performances in our educational research facility in Nolan Park.  Our goal is to provide exhibition opportunities to electronic media artists and also to educate the public about how artists use new and emerging technology for artistic expression.

Founded as a not-for-profit organization by artists in 1977, Harvestworks’ mission is to support the creation and presentation of art works achieved through the use of new and evolving technologies. We create an environment where artists can make work inspired and achieved by electronic media; provide a public context for the appreciation of new art; and bring together innovative practitioners from all branches of the arts collaborating in the use of electronic media. We assist with commissions and residencies, production services, education and information programs, and the presentation and distribution of their work.

Funded by mediaThefoundation Inc., the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.

LadyK

As a new media, fiber, and installation artist, LadyK’s practice encompasses interactive and responsive systems exploring how our collective digital experiences are shaping our future. She merges ancient fiber traditions with programming and physical computing to create nervous systems for her handcrafted soft fiber structures. In her piece Memory Capsules, she felted cocoons, embedding custom electronics and mini-displays, to depict memories. A viewer’s soft breath activates the cocoons, triggering the memories. Yet this system, which was entrusted to protect memories, instead warps, degrades, and erases them. Liminal spaces brought forth by digital technologies fascinate her, as LadyK explores the cultural transformations that result. Her latest environments investigate how communication technologies are shaping our identity, pushing a tighter integration with the machine. LadyK is the recipient of numerous state and national grants, including the NYSCA, Ohio Arts Council and Puffin Foundation, among others. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, including at Ars Electronica, ISEA, ZKM, Maryland Art Place, Indianapolis Art Center, Collar Works, The University of the Arts, the Contemporary Arts Center of Cincinnati, among others. Selected residencies include Harvestworks, Jentel, Weir Farm and Vermont Studio Center (full grant). Her work also appears in the Spring 2019 and 2020 issues of Fiber Arts Now. She teaches human-computer interaction design, programming, and physical computing at New York University’s Tandon School of Engineering.

Michael Schumacher

Michael J. Schumacher has worked with spatialized sound, computers and
electronics since the 1980s, creating multi-channel, generative “Room Pieces”
presented in galleries, museums, concert halls, public and private spaces. XI
Records has published a DVD set of five sound installations as computer
applications, playable on up to eight speakers, which may be installed on a computer
to create sound environments in the home. “Living Room Pieces” is another generative
installation designed for home listening; in 2021 Schumacher created an edition of
10 for Raspberry Pi. “The Portable Multi-channel Sound System” is an 8 or 12 channel
system that fits in a suitcase, with which he has toured Europe and the United
States. His interest in the intersections of musical form, architecture and social
spaces led to the founding, in 1996, of Diapason, a gallery devoted to the
presentation of multi-channel sound installations, long-duration performances and
intermedia artworks. In its 15 years of existence Diapason presented over 300
artists, at a time when sound art was emerging as a distinct practice in the United
States. Schumacher is the music director of the Liz Gerring Dance Company and
performs regularly with choreographer Sally Silvers. He studied music composition
with Stanley Applebaum, Bernhard Heiden, John Eaton and Vincent Persichetti and
piano with Seymour Bernstein, John Ogdon and Shigeo Neriki, and has degrees from
Indiana University and Juilliard. He also worked with La Monte Young and Milton
Babbitt. He has collaborated with choreographers, poets, architects, musicians and
filmmakers including Oren Ambarchi, Bruce Andrews, Tom Chiu, Charles Curtis, Ken
Jacobs, Victoria Meyers and Ursula Scherrer.

George Moraitis

My artistic approach focuses on the realm between sound sculpture,
audiovisual installations, two-dimensional works and performance. My work
incorporates sound and found objects which are often accompanied by drawings, screen
prints, video, photography and computer-controlled interactive installations in
which sound is utilised as a primary medium. My great interest in sound focuses on
acoustic and psychoacoustic themes as well as themes related to the body, sculpture
and video, as a mixture of peculiarities of perception, technology and materials. My
multi-layered installations and performances have been presented at venues across
Europe, including Reina Sofia Museum, Documenta 14, Goethe Institut, Οnassis
Cultural Centre, Biennale Némo in Paris, Stavros Niarchos Foundation and St. Mary’s
Cathedral Glasgow. – George Moraitis

Mike Bullock

Mike Bullock is an electroacoustic composer and environmental sound
recordist. Based in Western Massachusetts, he has been creating electroacoustic and
improvised music since the mid-90s. He has presented work at Experimental
Intermedia, ISSUE Project Room, and 5th Avenue Armory in New York City; Fylkingen in
Stockholm, Sweden; Instants Chavirés in Paris; Café OTO in London; The Philadelphia
Museum of Art; Wave Farm in Acra, NY; and EMPAC in Troy, NY. Bullock has received
grants from the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage and the Foundation for Contemporary
Arts. Bullock is the founder of Ears In Space, a studio for nature sound recording,
spatial audio, and listening practice. He is an Ambassador for the Kingdoms of
Elgaland-Vargaland.

Zorica Colic

Zorica Colic is a visual artist and educator, born in the former
Yugoslavia (now Serbia) and based in New York City. She was a resident artist at the
Whitney Museum’s Independent Study Program, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, NYA’s
Immigrant Artist Mentoring Program, Institute for Electronic Arts, and International
Summer Academy in Salzburg, among others. She is a 2023 NYFA/NYSCA Artist Fellow in
Digital/Electronic Arts.
