Harvestworks is pleased to be able to offer a robust program of workshops and experiences in our Art and Technology Program on Governors Island. Topics include World-building with Mozilla Hubs and it’s relationship to experimental music and Ambisonic / Binaural Audio Production. The instructor for the first sessions is Harvestworks affiliate artists Matthew D. Gantt followed by Melody Loveless later in the season. Program subject to change.

Sonic Environments and Worldbuilding w/ WebVR

( participants should bring their own laptop)
Workshop will focus on creative use of the free and open source Mozilla Hubs platform. No prior experience or coding required. Participants will learn how to create their own online, 3D virtual worlds from scratch using WebVR. The workshop will cover the basics of working in immersive reality contexts, and connect this skill-building to the history of experimental music, spatial sound and media art.

Ambisonic and Binaural Audio Production:

participants will require their own laptop w/ Reaper + IEM plugins installed (both free)This workshop will focus on the basics of immersive audio production, covering the basic conventions and terminology of ambisonic audio, as well as hands on approaches for developing sonic content. Participants will learn to set up and use the IEM ambisonic plugins inside the Reaper DAW to author and edit ambisonic sounds, build an ambisonic mix out of stereo or mono source material, as well as interchange these mixes for multichannel speaker set ups, binaural headphone mixes, virtual reality and similar. Unreal Engine 4 workshop for the music/artist. The workshop will concentrate on the basics on Unreal Engine with a strong focus on sound, and then branch into connecting it with ableton/max/ and others.

About the Artist

Matthew D. Gantt  is an artist, composer and educator currently based in Troy, NY. His practice focuses on sound in virtual spaces, generative systems facilitated by idiosyncratic technology, and digital production presets as sonic readymades.He worked as a studio assistant to electronics pioneer Morton Subotnick from 2016 – ’19, and has been an active participant in the NYC creative community, presenting or performing at spaces such as Pioneer Works, Issue Project Room, Roulette, Babycastles, Silent Barn and similar, as well as abroad (IRCAM Academy, Paris, Koma Elektronic, Synthesis Gallery, Berlin). 

Gantt has taught electronic and experimental composition across institutional and grassroots contexts, including Harvestworks, CUNY Brooklyn, Bard College, Sarah Lawrence, and community workshops aimed at creating equitable access to developing technologies. In Fall ’19, he joined the Games and Simulations, Art and Sciences PhD program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute/EMPAC, researching spatial sound, virtual reality and the experimental arts practice as a frame to refigure new possibilities for immersive media futures.

Matthew D. Gantt

Matthew D. Gantt is an artist, composer and educator currently based in

Melody Loveless

Melody Loveless is a musician, performer, educator, creative
technologist, and multimedia artist based in Brooklyn, NY. Her work ranges from live
coding performance, generative sound installations, multisensory performance, and
more. An active performer and member of the NYC creative community, she has
performed around the city in various venues, including Babycastles, Wonderville,
(le) poisson rouge, Performance Space New York, and Eyebeam. Additionally, she has
also organized/co-organized events including various concerts/performances,
exhibitions, conferences, hackathons, and more. Past honors include artist
residencies (local and international), performances and talks at conferences and
festivals, and awards and press for her music and work as a creative technologist
(see below for details). She has presented talks on music education and her artistic
practice for various organizations and events including the New Music Gathering,
Monthly Music Hackathon, Bates Digital Music Symposium, and Pathways: Art and
Technology. As an educator, she has taught in various institutes and organizations
including New York University, the New School, Hunter College, Music Hackspace, and
Harvestworks. She is also part of the first cohort of Cycling 74’s Max Certified
Trainer Program.
