Matthew Blessing is a music technologist, composer, and guitarist.
Blessingās research explores new human-computer interfaces focusing on musical
expression. His present work involves the design and digital fabrication of embedded
instruments, including the Apple Box, where machine learning tracks the
mel-frequency coefficients of piezos to detect tapping location on artillery boxes
to map data to sample processing; and embedded furniture pieces that run on an
embedded Linux CPU, Raspberry Pi, connected to a variety of interactive sensors,
amplifiers, and audio drivers. Blessingās installations and compositions have been
featured at SDSU Downtown Gallery and the Abrons Arts Center, and he has presented
his works at various New Interface for Musical Expression conferences. Blessingās
publications have also been featured in The Journal of the Acoustical Society of
America. As a lecturer, he has taught courses on electro-acoustic music and
composition technology at San Diego State University. He is well-versed in Pure
Data, Max/MSP, Python, Swift, Bash, JavaScript, MySQL, Raspberry Pi, Arduino, and
LEAP motion. Blessing has a PhD in Experimental Music and Digital Media from
Louisiana State University, and received his Master degree in Composition at San
Diego State University and Bachelor degrees in Music Composition and Classical
Guitar Performance from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale.
