Command and Control

Ivana Dama

John Brumley

Command and Control is a project that explores the idea of playing a musical instrument with your eyes— using custom pupil-tracking software to move motors that would make an acoustic sound.

Location: The Art and Technology Program exhibition in Building 10a, Nolan Park, Governors Island

Open to the public from 11 am to 5 pm Weekends

Meet the Artists Day: Saturday June 11, 2022

The project reflects on the power of eye movement that we often take for granted. It focuses on involuntary blinking and demonstrates the limits of our control- there is only so long that we can go without blinking. By establishing a set of rules, the audience would be able to make precise decisions, such as trigger multiple motors simultaneously or trigger a combination of movements. Sensory understanding of the world has grown in an increasingly digital age, and many of the current technologies are focused on bringing sensory experiences into the digital world. This project explores the potential of using digital data to effect change in the physical world, challenging the traditional idea of the performers as masters of the instrument.

John Brumley

John Brumley’s work absorbs contemporary skill sets and emerging forms of diversion into saturated masses of media with the aim of being simultaneously frantic and boring. Emerging conceptions of virtuosity, new modes of learning, and the eminence of “weird trick” solutions have prompted further investigation into the memetics of the mediated physical world. Plotting points at which the motivations for contemporary activities become irrevocably trapped in networks of subterranean fibre. Currently living in Japan and pursuing a PhD. in Empowerment Informatics, Brumley’s research focuses on using mixed reality systems to promote collaboration in physical space. Brumley received an MFA in Design Media Arts from UCLA and a BA in music composition from UC Davis. He has been a Radio DJ, a touring improviser, and a practitioner of Western Javanese Gamelan music.
